Speedball Mid-Fire Glazes

Speedball Mid-Fire Glazes for Cone 5/6 Pottery

Speedball Mid-Fire Glazes are designed to create mottled, reduction-like effects when fired at Cone 5/6. Use each glaze on its own for a distinctive fired finish, or layer colours to explore further movement, variation and glaze combinations.

Originally developed in partnership with ceramic artist Nancy Sowder, the range includes 36 Speedball mid-fire glaze colours for pottery studios, ceramic artists and makers. The collection includes soft neutrals, vivid colours, darker tones and reactive-looking finishes for varied creative results.

Results can vary depending on application thickness, layering, clay body, kiln and firing process. Create test pieces using your own materials and techniques before applying a new colour or combination to important work.

How to Get the Most from Speedball Mid-Fire Glazes

Application and firing methods can affect the final glaze result. Make test pieces that reflect your usual clay body, glaze thickness and kiln process, and use a normal cooling cycle across the range for more consistent comparisons.

Colours can be used individually or layered to create further variation. Review the video and glaze colour poster below for application guidance and examples from across the Speedball Mid-Fire range.

Application Directions

  1. Stir the glaze thoroughly before use.
  2. Apply an even coat of glaze to the ceramic or pottery piece.
  3. Fire the piece at Cone 5/6 oxidation.
  4. Follow the specific instructions for your kiln and glazing techniques.
