BOTZ Earthenware Engobes 800ml

Brush-On BOTZ Earthenware Engobes for Ceramic Decoration

BOTZ Earthenware Engobes are ready-to-use coloured liquid clays for adding fired colour and surface decoration to pottery. Supplied in 800ml jars, they can be brushed onto leather-hard, dried unfired or biscuit-fired clay. When fired without an overglaze, the engobes retain an earthy, matt ceramic surface that allows the colour and character of the engobe itself to remain visible.

Apply a thin transparent glaze when you want a brighter, more intense colour with a glazed surface instead of the natural matt result. The range also gives you several decorative options, including sgraffito, marbling and mixing BOTZ Earthenware Engobe colours together to create custom shades within the supported firing range.

Application & Firing Guide

  • Firing range: 900–1100°C.
  • Application: apply 2–3 coats with a brush to leather-hard, dried unfired or biscuit-fired clay.
  • Unglazed finish: leave without an overglaze for an earthy, matt ceramic surface.
  • Transparent overglaze: a thin transparent glaze produces a brighter, more intense colour with a glazed surface; BOTZ recommends approximately 1050°C for the transparent-overglazed result.
  • Sgraffito: apply the engobe, then scratch or carve through the coloured layer to reveal the clay beneath and create contrasting lines or patterns.
  • Marbling: use the engobe slightly diluted on soaked biscuit-fired clay or leather-hard clay.
  • Colour mixing: colours within the BOTZ Earthenware Engobe range can be mixed with each other within the 900–1100°C firing range to create custom colours.
  • Individual colours: some colours can have specific firing behaviour, so check the relevant product information where additional instructions are given.
