During ceramic firing, certain clays, glazes and other materials can release fumes, vapours and odours. A suitable kiln ventilation system can help improve working conditions by collecting and directing firing emissions away from the kiln room. The right arrangement depends on the kiln model, the equipment being used and the workspace.
Managing firing fumes is an important consideration for pottery studios, schools, colleges and other places where electric kilns are used. Purpose-designed extraction systems are intended to remove fumes produced during firing. Some systems can also help maintain the kiln's firing atmosphere, although the results depend on the kiln, the materials being fired and the way the system is installed and operated.
General room ventilation brings fresh air into a workspace and allows indoor air to be replaced. A dedicated downdraft kiln extraction system works differently: on compatible kilns, it draws a controlled amount of air through the kiln and uses ducting to discharge extracted air outdoors.
These two approaches serve different purposes. A kiln venting system should not automatically be treated as a replacement for adequate room ventilation, and general-purpose fans or open windows are not the same as a purpose-designed kiln extraction system.
Our kiln venting department includes Skutt EnviroVent 2 and Orton VentMaster systems, together with selected hoses, ducting, connectors, collection cups and other associated accessories. Both manufacturers offer downdraft ventilation equipment designed for use with suitable electric kilns.
We also list an automatic motorised damper for compatible Cromartie CFL Premium front-loading kilns. This is a different type of kiln venting control component and should not be confused with a complete downdraft extraction system.
