Studio Line Crystalline Stoneware Glazes

Crystal glazes are crystalline glazes in which real unique crystals are created in the glaze surface during the firing process. No two pieces are ever exactly the same, that’s what makes Crystal glaze so special. Create crystal formations on a standard 1220 °C / cone 6 firing with just a 20 minute soak. Further crystal growth can be achieved by more complex firing schedules.

The glazes are suitable for both porcelain and stoneware bodys.

Basic application. Stir well. Brush, sponge or stamp. Use as top coat layer. Apply 2-3 layers depending on the desired result. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next coat. Can run, so reducing number of coats at the base of your piece may be advised.

Tips:

A beautiful glassy effect can be achieved with a top-coat of Vibes.

A glaze catcher is recommended for a full crystalline firing schedule.

Try out the glaze in your kiln on your clay body. (The choice of clay body, thickness of glaze application, combination of glazes, the firing process and temperature will affect the fired results.)

Cone 7 Firing Schedule Fire at a rate of 175°C per hour to 1210°C, then hold for 10 minutes.

After the peak temperature, follow this cooling cycle:

Cool at full power down to 1023°C and hold for 45 minutes.

Continue full power down to 987°C and hold for 10 minutes.

Heat again at full power up to 1023°C and hold for 45 minutes.

Finally, cool at full power down to 987°C and hold for 10 minutes.

If the controller does not allow for programmed cooling stages, use the simplified schedule instead: Fire at 175°C per hour to 1220°C and hold for 20 minutes.

The formation of larger crystals occurs during the cooling and soaking stages of the cycle.
