Our crystalline stoneware glazes, also known as crystal glazes, are specialist high-temperature pottery glazes designed to create striking crystal formations within the glaze surface during firing. Each result is completely individual, making these glazes a favourite among experienced potters and studio makers.
Fired at Cone 6 and above, crystalline pottery glazes can produce dramatic crystal growth on both stoneware and porcelain clay bodies. Subtle changes in temperature, cooling cycles and glaze thickness can significantly influence the size, shape and distribution of crystals, offering huge creative potential through testing and refinement.
On a standard Cone 6 firing at around 1220 °C, crystal formations can be achieved with a simple soak. For larger or more complex crystal development, extended and stepped cooling schedules typical of Cone 7 firings may be used. These reactive glazes are most commonly applied as a top coat and are known to flow, so careful application is recommended.
Suitable for functional and decorative ceramics alike, crystalline glazes reward patience and control with rich, glassy surfaces and one-of-a-kind finishes. Fired results will always vary depending on kiln, clay body and firing programme — part of what makes crystal glaze pottery so exciting to work with.
