White Earthenware Engobe for Sgraffito & Matt Decoration
White BOTZ Earthenware Engobe creates a clean white surface with an earthy matt character when fired without overglazing. Its light colour is particularly useful where carved marks, relief and contrasting decoration need to remain visually clear, giving sgraffito and simple linework a pale ground that keeps the surface design easy to read.
Sgraffito can be used to cut decoration through the coloured surface, while slightly diluted engobe can be used for marbling on soaked biscuit-fired or leather-hard clay to introduce more fluid pattern. If a brighter colour response is wanted instead of the earthy matt result, a thin transparent overglaze increases the colour intensity.
White can also be used as a pourable clay for small objects. For this application, fire at 1050°C, where the material sinters frost-resistant.
