Crystalline Glaze for Stoneware & Porcelain

Studio Line Crystalline Stoneware Glazes are specialist crystalline glaze products for pottery, stoneware and porcelain. These high-temperature glazes are designed to develop crystal formations within the fired glaze surface, creating rich gloss finishes with varied crystalline effects.

Crystalline pottery glazes reward testing and control. Glaze thickness, clay body, kiln temperature, soak time and cooling schedule can all influence the size, shape and placement of the crystal development, so test pieces are recommended before using them on important work.

Firing & Finish

  • Firing range: 1180–1280°C / Cone 4–9
  • Finish: gloss surface with strong crystal development
  • Clay bodies: suitable for stoneware and porcelain
  • Food safe: when mixed with Matt, Bright or Celadon glazes in the Studio Line range
  • Application note: commonly used as a top coat and known to flow, so careful application is recommended

On a standard Cone 6 firing at around 1220°C, crystal formations can be achieved with a simple soak. For larger or more complex crystal growth, extended and stepped cooling schedules typical of Cone 7 firings may be used.

This page is for crystalline stoneware glaze intent. For decorative low-fire crystal-effect glazes with coloured crystal specks, use the Cromartie Crystals Glazes page instead.

Note: Crystalline glaze results can vary significantly by kiln, clay body, application thickness and firing programme. Always test before using on important pieces.
