Brown & Charcoal Crystalline Glaze with Gloss Crystal Development
Smoky Quartz Studio Line Crystalline Glaze develops a gloss-fired surface with deep brown and charcoal crystal formations, broken by softer green-grey areas between the rounded crystalline patterns. The varied, stone-like appearance makes the glaze itself a strong part of the decoration rather than producing a flat, uniform colour.
Choose Smoky Quartz when you want visible crystalline development and natural variation across the fired surface. Crystal size, colour and distribution can change with glaze thickness, clay body, firing cycle and kiln atmosphere, so test pieces are recommended before using the glaze on important work.
- Known to flow during firing, so keep heavier application away from the base and allow for glaze movement.
- A standard Cone 6 firing at around 1220°C can develop crystals with a soak.
- Extended or stepped cooling can encourage larger or more complex crystal growth.
