Smoky Black & Graphite Crystalline Glaze with a Gloss Finish
Obsidian Studio Line Crystalline Glaze develops smoky black and graphite tones across a dark gloss-fired surface, with crystalline variation adding depth and movement to the finish. Its subdued, mineral-like colour makes it a useful choice when you want a darker crystalline surface without relying on a flat, uniform black glaze.
Crystal development can change with glaze thickness, clay body and firing conditions, so test Obsidian on your chosen body and firing schedule before using it on important work. Adjusting the firing cycle with soaking or controlled cooling can also influence the final crystalline result.
- Known to flow during firing, so keep heavier application away from the base and allow for glaze movement.
- A standard Cone 6 firing at around 1220°C can develop crystal formations with a soak.
- Extended or stepped cooling can encourage larger or more complex crystal growth.
