Mother of Pearl Lustre – 100g
Mother of Pearl Lustre from Colorobbia is a beautiful iridescent overglaze designed for use on
glazed earthenware, porcelain and stoneware. When fired correctly, it produces a soft,
shimmering rainbow finish that enhances raised details, smooth surfaces and decorative accents.
This lustre is applied to an already glazed and fired piece, then taken through a low-temperature
lustre firing. It can be used for fine detailing, all-over washes or layered effects depending on
your chosen application technique.
Firing Temperatures
- Ceramic: 690°C – 700°C (Orton Cone 018)
- Porcelain: 750°C – 815°C (Orton Cone 017 – 015)
Application & Working Notes
For the best results, pieces must be fully glazed, fired and completely dry before application.
Use a smooth, soft brush and apply the lustre in a single, even stroke. The layer must be thin —
heavy application can cause burning, cloudiness or poor adhesion in the kiln.
Colorobbia lustres are supplied ready to use, though Mother of Pearl should be diluted between
5%–15% using HTL199 thinner to achieve a smooth, brushable consistency.
Brushes should also be cleaned using HTL199 and kept away from water during use.
Mother of Pearl is more sensitive to thickness than other lustres. If applied too heavily, it can
burn away during firing, leaving a white powdery residue. Using precision scales when diluting
is recommended to maintain consistency across batches.
Important Information
- Not food safe — decorative use only.
- Keep brushes, bottles and tools free from water contamination.
- Always test on a small piece before large-scale production.
- Do not apply over unfired glaze or damp surfaces.
Disclaimer: Firing conditions, kiln performance and application methods
may vary. Testing is strongly recommended to achieve consistent results.
