Skutt Wheel Speed Control Potentiometer for Foot Pedal Repairs

This replacement potentiometer is designed for compatible Skutt potters wheels and is located inside the foot pedal assembly. It communicates the movement of the foot pedal to the wheel controller, allowing the speed of the wheel head to be adjusted smoothly while throwing or trimming.

Potentiometers are generally robust components, but they can become damaged if the foot pedal gets wet or if the cable leading to the pedal is placed under abnormal strain. This replacement Skutt wheel potentiometer is a useful spare part for studios, schools, colleges and potters carrying out foot pedal or speed control repairs.

Fitting Guidance

  1. Unplug the wheel from the outlet before starting any work.
  2. Remove the bottom cover plate from the foot pedal by taking out the 4 screws inside the rubber feet.
  3. Make a note of the slot position on the cover plate before removing the old potentiometer.
  4. Cut as little wire as possible when removing the old component and note which wire colour connects to each terminal.
  5. Pull approximately 2 inches of black wire into the foot pedal and remove around 2 inches of the outer jacket from the cord end.
  6. Slip heat shrink tubing over each wire, strip the wire ends and connect them to the new potentiometer lugs.
  7. Connect the black wire to the lug by itself, the red wire to the middle lug and the white wire to the lug closest to the red wire.
  8. Solder the wires in place, cover the joints with heat shrink tubing and heat carefully to secure.
  9. Position the potentiometer back inside the foot pedal with the black wire closest to the machined slot in the pedal casting.
  10. Make sure the tab on the potentiometer is bent 90 degrees so it protrudes through the slot on the bottom cover plate.
  11. Replace the bottom plate, taking care not to overtighten the rubber feet.

Note: Electrical repairs should only be carried out by someone competent to do so. Always unplug the wheel before working on the foot pedal assembly and check compatibility before ordering.
