Grey Earthenware Engobe for Subtle Sgraffito & Linework
Grey BOTZ Earthenware Engobe creates a muted grey ceramic surface with an earthy matt character when left without overglazing. Its restrained colour makes it a useful choice when the decoration rather than the background should take the lead, allowing both pale and dark linework to remain clearly visible without the strong colour contrast of brighter engobes.
Sgraffito can be used to cut simple motifs and fine lines through the coloured surface, while slightly diluted engobe can be used for marbling on soaked biscuit-fired or leather-hard clay. A thin transparent overglaze increases the colour intensity when a brighter surface is preferred to the softer un-overglazed matt result.
Grey can also be used as a pourable clay for small objects. For this application, fire at 1050°C, where it sinters frost-resistant.
