Black Earthenware Engobe with Firing-Responsive Colour
Black BOTZ Earthenware Engobe provides a dark surface that gives pale carved or incised decoration especially strong definition, while darker linework can create a much more understated effect. Its colour also changes with firing temperature: around 900°C it becomes grey, developing to black from approximately 1020°C and above.
Without overglazing, the engobe develops an earthy matt surface that suits graphic decoration and high-contrast sgraffito. Slightly diluted engobe can also be used for marbling on soaked biscuit-fired or leather-hard clay, while a thin transparent overglaze increases the colour intensity when a brighter surface is preferred.
