Black-Based Glaze with Mustard and Orange-Brown Effects
Create dramatic dark stoneware surfaces with BOTZ Salamander Stoneware Glaze. This black-based effect glaze develops fine mustard-yellow precipitations arranged in ring-like patterns, with warmer orange-brown effects appearing at the upper end of the firing range.
Apply 2–3 coats. BOTZ specifies 3 coats when firing at 1250°C to achieve the characteristic Salamander effect, and only 2 coats at 1280°C. Fire between 1220°C and 1280°C with a 30-minute soak, with BOTZ describing the result as most attractive from 1250°C upwards. At 1280°C the glaze becomes silk-matt black with orange-brown precipitations and can develop running effects where it is applied locally in a thicker coat.
