Tips for Firing Stoneware Bisque

Bisque shrinks approximately 10% during firing.
Ensure pieces are placed on a kiln-washed shelf – do not stilt, as the bisque is soft-fired, and stilts may embed during firing.
Fire at Cone 6 for optimal strength and glaze results.
Fully support stoneware bisque during firing by placing pieces entirely on one shelf rather than extending them over the edge or onto another shelf.
For best results, direct mug handles toward the centre of the kiln to encourage even heating.

How to Track and Organise Your Stoneware Firings

To ensure your stoneware pieces are fired at the correct temperature (Cone 6), consider the following tips:

Keep stoneware separate from earthenware to prevent mix-ups.
Designate a specific shelf or storage area for your stoneware bisque.
Use coloured slips of paper or tags to differentiate stoneware from lower-firing ceramics.
Plan ahead by setting designated Cone 6 firing days to streamline production and ensure timely completion of projects.
