Alginart Skin Safe Colour Change Alginate 450g - Lifecasting Moulding Powder

Alginart Skin Safe Colour Change Alginate is a fast-setting moulding powder for taking highly detailed impressions of hands, feet, objects and body casts. When mixed with water, it forms a flexible rubber-like mould that captures fine surface detail, making it ideal for lifecasting, keepsake hand and foot prints, craft casting and plaster casting projects.

This 450g standard set alginate is non-toxic and skin safe, making it suitable for use directly against the skin when used as instructed. The chromatic colour change helps guide the working process, changing from bright pink while mixing to pale pink when ready to use, then setting to white once the mould is ready.

Important mixing note

Alginate sets quickly, so measure everything before you begin and work promptly. Warmer water will make the alginate set faster, while colder water will slow the setting time. For best results, cast the finished mould as soon as possible and keep the alginate mould damp until casting.

Alginart 450g User Guide

  1. Measure the powder and water into separate bowls before you begin. Use approximately 1 part powder to 3 parts water, for example 100g powder to 300ml water. Water should be around 20°C - 23°C.
  2. Choose a container just a little larger than the hand, foot or object you are moulding. Add the powder to the container first, then pour the water onto the powder and start timing.
  3. Mix immediately using a palette knife or flat spatula. After approximately 20 seconds, use a whisk or hand blender to help make the mixture smooth.
  4. Mix for approximately 2 minutes while the alginate is bright pink. When the colour turns pale pink, place the hand, foot or object into the mixture. For other lifecasting projects, spread the alginate onto the model.
  5. Keep still for approximately 2 minutes until the alginate sets and turns grey-white or white. Then gently wriggle the hand, foot or object free and rinse the model’s skin.
  6. Cast the mould straight away with plaster of Paris or suitable casting plaster for best results.

Packet mixing guide

Add 100g powder to 300ml water at approximately 23°C. Do not add water to powder, as it does not mix well. Mix for approximately 2 minutes while the alginate is bright pink. When the colour turns pale pink, put the body part or object into the mixture. Keep still for approximately 2 minutes until the alginate sets and turns white, then carefully wriggle the limb or object free.
